The Best Beaches to Celebrate Memorial Day

May 23, 2018Reading Time: 5 min

As you enjoy the three-day weekend that also marks the start of summer, be sure to treat this holiday with the reverence it deserves. After all, this day is meant to commemorate the sacrifices made by America's military. This is a great time to get out of the house and spend some time enjoying the great outdoors, so why not visit the beach? Below are our choices for the best beaches across the country you can visit Memorial Day weekend:

Malibu California Beach

West Coast Beaches

People often opt for beautiful Malibu, California in lieu of visiting busier, urban spots like Santa Monica and Venice. If you decide to visit Malibu this weekend be sure to check out El Matador State beach as well as Zuma Beach while you're there! El Matador is a small beach that rests beneath rocky cliffs. Bring along your camera to capture beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean that you'll never want to forget! However, be prepared to arrive early to stake out the perfect spot in the sand. Zuma Beach also has gorgeous sandy shores that offer many activities such as volleyball, surfing, and fishing! You won't have to pack a lunch as you can grab a quick bite to eat at any of the unique, local restaurants nearby.

Redondo Beach California

Dockweiler State Beach in Marina Del Ray, California is known for its scenic picnic areas and rustic fire pits that are perfect for roasting marshmallows under the stars. While it may be slightly more crowded here on Memorial Day, you will still have an exciting day. Bring friends and family and prepare to meet new people as there are always campers and locals nearby! Redondo Beach, California is another fantastic spot that tends to feature less foot traffic. During your visit, you can make a stop at the delicious Original Pancake House to dine on a local delicacy. If you venture a little further south, you will arrive at San Diego, California which is home to many Marine Corps and Naval bases. You can travel there on Memorial Day weekend to celebrate Legacy Week and give your respects to those who gave their service for the country. If you visit beaches in Coronado, you may just see the Navy SEALS!

Oregon and Washington are also replete with dazzling beaches that are up and down the coast. Long Beach in Washington is a very popular destination where you can enjoy both the beach and a local pier. Here you can take a relaxing walk down the boardwalk through the Peninsula, or stop to visit the World Kite Museum. Gold Beach, Oregon is a stunning area where you can hike in lush forests and stroll through secluded beaches. Have a pet? Check out Pistol River Scenic View Point in Gold Beach for a pet-friendly spot where you can bring Fido. In fact, Bring Fido is a great website that allows you to look up pet friendly beaches in your area!

Folly Beach New York

East Coast Beaches

The entire East Coast is home to some phenomenal beaches that you'll have to see to believe. In Charleston, South Carolina, you'll find the Spoleto festival which celebrates dance and theater. During your time here, you can grab some grub at the oyster roast on Mingo Point and then journey to the nearby Folly Beach to check out the lighthouse and pier. Here you can soak in the gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Jones Beach Air Show New York

If you're looking for a unique experience, check out New York's 15th annual Jones Beach Air Show! Every year, tourists and locals alike flock to the barrier beach to celebrate this event in the spirit of Memorial Day! You will meet tons of locals as you watch the U.S. Navy Blue Angels perform. If you find yourself in the southeast this Memorial Day - you're in luck! Florida is essentially one big beach with both East and West coasts. Some beach suggestions include: St. Augustine, New Smyrna Beach, Amelia Island, St. George Island, and Sanibel Island.

Sandbridge Beach was founded on the south end of Virginia Beach, Virginia and is home to an annual Strawberry Festival that takes place on Memorial Day weekend. While the waters tend to be colder in May, the views, foods, and atmosphere are always awe-inspiring. Additionally, Cape Cod is a long stretch of nearly endless beaches in Massachusetts. You can drive through the Cape and stop almost anywhere for a good time! One stop we recommend is Provincetown, which is especially popular as it offers restaurants and an active social scene. It'll be busy, but it's worth it!

Memorial Day Celebration

Celebrate & Honor

While we focus on beaches throughout the East and West Coasts, there are also many beaches and Memorial Day activities occurring throughout the Midwest and Hawaii. Wherever you find yourself this Memorial Day, be sure to take a moment to honor what the day is really about: our military and their sacrifices.
