Interior decorating can be an expensive endeavor. Trying to find that perfect new piece or sprucing up a favorite old item can be as easy as looking around your home to get inspired ideas. One of the first places to look is in your closet. If you have old clothing items that are worn, have holes, or have sentimental value, why not use them to create items for your home.
Throw Pillows
Throw pillows are a great way to update a space but can cost a small fortune. If you are handy with a sewing machine, try making a few pillows out of some of your favorite old clothing. You can take that ratty pair of denim jeans and pair it with a band of lace from an old dress to create a shabby chic pillow. Want to add a little winter cheer to your room? Try creating a throw pillow out of an old plaid shirt.
Lamp Shades
Adding a new lamp shade can cost up to $100, but why take money out of your bank account when you can simply resurface an existing lampshade with an attractive sweater or lace camisole. All you will need is a measuring tape, some hot glue, and the old lamp shade. Alternatively, you could use an old t-shirt and create a stunning romantic lampshade.
Pallets
Wood pallets are easy to come by, and the different furnishings that you can create for your home are endless. If you can wield a hammer, you can create stunning pieces for any area of your abode. From bar stools to lemonade stands, wood pallets can be transformed into usable furniture that you can put your personal stamp on.
Key Holders
You can create a DIY key holder with just about anything. Try creating a holder out of Lego and attach small pieces to your keychain then just click into place at the end of your day. You can also use old cutlery to construct a romantic shabby chic key holder. Simply drill a small hole at the end of the spoon or fork, bend up and attach to the wall. Hang keys, dog leashes or even pictures from the bent piece of cutlery.
Lighting
Industrial lighting is very popular these days, but the price tags that go along with those fixtures are sometimes excessive. Try creating your own industrial light fixtures by using old wine bottles, mason jars, or pieces of scrap metal. You can also swap out old glass panels in fixtures with chicken wire to give a dated fixture new life.
Shelving
Take a look around your home and see if you need extra storage space. Handcraft a new shelf or bookshelf out of old pipes, broken wood furniture or by mounting folding wood chairs to the wall. For a small shelf use two brackets and adhere an old book to the brackets for an excellent way to display some of your favorite little trinkets.
Reusing and upcycling the items in your home that you no longer use or like is a great way to add your personal touch to your surroundings. Try a small project first, and before you know it, you will be DIY’ing and making your home new again.
